Gamay has had a colourful history to say the least. If it wasn't for Kind Phillip the bold we would probably be drinking millions of litres of this rather than Pinot Noir! He banned it in burgundy calling it the “bastard” grape for some relativity tenuous reason. Luckily for you, at Lyons Will, we this Gamay is anything but a “bastard” but in fact a brilliant drink with fantastic character.
In France its called or comes from Beaujolais. Its full name, even if it’s never actually ever used is “Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc”. It is a very old cultivar, mentioned as long ago as the 15th century. The plant crops high, making it hard to control, however when managed well and planted in soils high in acids it can produce wine with plenty of distinction.
The Gamay Block was planted in 2013 and is approximately 2.5 acres and consists of two clone varietals. Our first harvest from this block was in 2017. Our production for this vintage was just under 1 tonne per acre resulting in a final production of just over 100 cases, which was released May this year, head to our online store for more details.
