The Farawell Vineyard - Established in 1996
This is the original vineyard established by Bob and Barbara Farrawell, established in 1996, with a purpose to produce sparkling wine. Soon after its first harvest all surplus fruit from this vineyard became suppliers of cool climate chardonnay and pinot noir to ShadowFax in their Macedon table wines prior to 2013.
Chardonnay, 1.6 Acres, Clones I10V1, V3, V5
On the side of an old volcanic eruption, this vineyard has a unique character. The vines are planted on the north to north east aspect. The grey kandosols bring out strong minerality in the wine and these soils are a natural prohibitor of excessive vigour.
Pinot Noir, 2.78 acres, Clones D5V12, Pommard, 115 & MV6
This south facing slope is on a completely different soil line to the Chardonnay. Predominantly yellow clay rich kandosols these soils provide a nutrient rich base for the vines to grow in. D5V12 is a vine know for its upright growing habit and generous yield. This block has 15% of its fruit dropped annually to ensure ripening consistency, along with an early season hedging regime, encouraging lateral growth and canopy thickness. The wines from this fruit are floral, acid driven, punchy and have a thin silky tanning structure. MV6, 115 and Pommard are not dropped through the season and are self manageable. MV6 in nature has smallish compact bunches, a relatively dull nose but a structure wine with plenty of dark fruit.
